Wine Happy Hour: Traditional Italian Aperitivo Hour

Wine Happy Hour: Traditional Italian Aperitivo Hour

Thursday, June 21st, 4-6pm (summer solstice)

Historically a northern Italian concept from Genoa to Milan and Venice, Aperitivo Hour is flush with appetizing beverage and small bites. The goal is to be in the company of friends, food, and beverage—the true trifecta of a rich, social culture.

Solo Italiano will embrace this tradition and open its doors and patio to Portland Wine Week's visitors and showcase Aperitivo Hour's full, authentic experience. All of chef Paolo Laboa's 'small bite' culinary creations Del Giorno will be complimentary, with appetizing wines, vermouths, and/or wine-based spirit cocktails the responsibility of the guest. Opportunities to relax while learning a bit about this dynamic of wine and food culture in Italy will certainly abound.

This is a non-ticketed event, but please call ahead and make a reservation, if possible, so we can gauge how many to plan for! (207) 780-0227

Mother's Day Lunch & Castello di Ama Wine Dinner

Mother's Day Lunch & Castello di Ama Wine Dinner

May 13th, 2018

This coming Mother's Day will be a double feature!

Between 12 and 3pm, Chef Paolo Laboa will once again be featuring a special lunch menu, in honor of the women in his life who inspired his own culinary passion. There are rumors of a unique "Del Giorno" dessert list, designed to punctuate a celebration of mothers of all types. Broadturn Farm will be decorating your table with some of spring's first floral color. And we will be sure to have a stockpile of our favorite Grand Cuvée prosecco to fulfill all toasting needs.

Then, beginning with the start of dinner service at 5pm and running until 9pm, we will be hosting Tuscan winery Castello di Ama. With the help of The Sorting Table and Rogers Collection, we have joined forces to design a dinner menu around some of the finest wine and tastiest olive oil in Chianti Classico. Janice Verrecchio will be in town from the winery to answer questions and talk about the wines as well as the historic Castello di Ama estate. Rosemont Market will again be stepping up as a retail partner should you want to secure some of your own. Keep in mind, the menu will be designed around the wine but it will not be a pre-fixe. Order as much as or as little food (and wine) as your heart desires! Family style–as always–recommended should you go for the full flight and multi-coursed affair.

Both of these features will be non-ticketed, so please plan accordingly and call ahead for reservations (or book online). Your mother will thank you for doing so.

Winemaker Dinner: Amarone, Ripasso and the Legacy of Giovanni Bertani

Winemaker Dinner: Amarone, Ripasso and the Legacy of Giovanni Bertani

Sunday, June 24th 2018

Meet Giovanni Bertani, great-grandson of the mind behind Ripasso and Amarone, of Tenuta Santa Maria! He will be in house to talk about his family's love and use of Corvina as well as their innovative approach to winemaking that produced these iconic styles of wine we know today.

Seating will occur all night long, with the daily menu designed around the wines on offer. Chef Paolo Laboa will offer classic Genovese dishes that we all know and love, but be sure to expect traditional Veneto cuisine to pepper the menu as well. Since it is not a pre-fixe menu, you are welcome to eat as much or as little as you’d like–opt for a full family style, five-course affair with a complete flight of Giovanni's wines or eat light with one course and a glass of wine. The choice is yours!

This will not be a ticketed event, but seats are filling, so reservations are strongly encouraged. Feel free to call with any questions.

Dinner with our Farmers to Benefit MOFGA

Dinner with our Farmers to Benefit MOFGA

Just in time for the spring equinox and the beginning of 2018’s growing season, we are excited to announce our second Farmer Appreciation Dinner. It will be a benefit dinner with 20% of proceeds from the evening being directed toward the Maine Organic Farmers and Growers Association (MOFGA). MOFGA has committed to using these funds for supporting the Agricultural Services program that provides in-house education and “on farm” technical assistance to farmers, gardeners and agricultural businesses to increase organic best practices and address problems such as soil fertility, disease identification, and pest prevention. The vision behind the dinner is aimed at bringing all types of folks within the food production and consumption community together to underscore the need for understanding and involvement so that our wholesome food system here in Maine can not only grow but thrive.

Present for the evening will be many of the farmers we work with regularly, including Ian at Stonecipher, Beth from Dandelion Springs Farm, Stacy at Broadturn, Scott over at Olivia's Garden and Joe of Two Coves Farm as well as Eric Buch, the Membership and Development Director of MOFGA. All are excited to connect with you, talk about what they do and why they do it, and even share some of their favorite stories from the irrigation trenches. Also, in collaboration with Ned Swain of Devenish Wines, we will be offering an optional wine pairing flight of certified organic Italian vino by Omero Moretti of Umbria. Ned will be present to discuss Omero’s dedication to organic winemaking and the local community he supports along the way.

The affair will be a ticketed event for seating in the Main Dining Room and it will begin at 6pm. You can purchase yours here!

**Tickets are $95, which includes 20% benefit to MOFGA, tax and gratuity as well as the five course dinner. Wine pairing will be optional and additional the night of the event.**

Dinner & Wine with Marco Sara of Friuli

Coming from Colli Orientali, the finest DOC in the heart of Friuli, Marco Sara will be in house to discuss a passion for winemaking that is natural, generational and locally-dynamic. The beauty of Marco's wine comes through not just with its persistently clean, balanced and aromatic character; in fact, it shines when you remind yourself of his respect for, and incorporation of, the grapes' and vines' natural environment from growth to bottling.

As has become usual for our wine dinners, Chef Paolo will design the nightly menu around Marco's showcased wines, which include a Verduzzo table wine, two distinct styles of Friulano, a Cabernet Franc and a Verduzzo dessert wine. Opportunity for retail purchase of all but the dessert wine will be possible through Brown Trading following your meal.

Please call ahead with any questions.
